Only in China...

Do you get free green bean pea popsicles at work...

and you see this...(thank goodness for the 1 child policy)

...although in Vietnam I did frequently see a family of 4 on a scooter.

Dude...5 months since my last post. Ooops. Well, I'm still alive. My excuse is they've blocked xanga here in China, so it isn't the easiest to post...but I have my ways =). This is rather a nerdy post, but Oh well.

Transformers
I think one of the cool things about Shanghai is that lots of big pop culture things tend to come here. There's a mall connected to my office building and this week they had a huge Transformer's display. I was suddenly taken back to my child-hood days and remember the hours and hours I used to play with them. It looked like they had every single Tranformer toy ever made on display. They also had the transformers the movie sound track playing in the background and huge LCD screens everywhere with the cartoon playing. I've been dying all week to go by and take pictures of everything to refresh my child-hood memories. Sadly, I went back this morning and the display was gone *sniff*. Sadness. Uber-sadness.

Transformers the movie (new one)
I guess I might as well write what I thought about the movie. Feelings were mixed for me. I'm actually surprised at how highly other people have thought about it. I was rather disappointed what they did with the story...I felt like it was missing the classic feel of Transformers. Like when did Megatron have wings instead of being a gun? Why wasn't Bumblebee a beetle? Why did they change up the story...the autobots and decepticons were supposed to crash into a volcano in a spaceship, not come done and fight over some cube thingy. From purely a movie perspective, I enjoyed the computer graphics (although I thought the screen were way too busy to tell what was going on). I think I would've enjoyed the movie more with some other label besides Transformers. I still like the original cartoon movie over this one. But hey...not a bad sci-fi film.

This is really old but...
Ya know...doors are really opening out here. Can you believe United Live came out here? Got to meet the dudes too...they're pretty cool.

Wii

I thought I'd never do it...i even laughed when I saw on the news ppl lining up to get a Ps3 or a Wii...haha. ha. So here I was in line at Target. Woke up at 5:30am and got the #10 spot out of 40+ people. I must say though, it's been a hit ever since I brought it back here - My appartment-mate Thomas loves it!

Wicked

Also spent a belated valentine's day in LA with Deborah. We went to see Wicked - wow, what a great musical! I think what really got me was how it wasn't just another prequal like star wars, batman begins, or the Godfather, but it overlapped with the original story making ya think of the story in a whole new way. Definitely worth 6000 miles.

...and now I'm back in Shanghai. 我的中文不好!

Snowboarding in Shanghai
What? Snowboarding in Shanghai? Yes, last weekend I went snowboarding. Quite a trip...hehe. They have an indoor ski/snowboarding place and it's only like $25 for a full day of fun. The cool thing is that you just hop onto the metro and in about 45 minutes you're there. I love the convenience of things here in Shanghai. Ok, but here's the catch, whatever you do, just don't call it snowboarding and you'll have a lot of fun. Like if you compare it to tahoe, or even places in SoCal, this would be the absolutely worst place ever. But if you don't compare it, and just call it something like "playing on a board on something similar to snow", then it'll be a blast!

snow
Here's a picture at the top of the mountain...err...whatever you call it. Yeah, it's like a big bunny slope. They do have a small park though with rails and a few jumps

lift
Here's what the lift looked like...it took me and my friends a really long time to figure out how to comfortably ride it. It's like a rope with a disc at the bottom which you're supposed to sit on and let it drag you up...yeah, very uncomfortable

The Art of Posting
Wowzers, been a while since I've last updated. I think I just need to get in the groove of posting posts that are quick and easy rather than spending hours posting pretty pictures and thinking about how to word things. I was reminded today (and yesterday) at how poorly I write 'cause I'm writing a "developer's technical specification" on some work I'm doing here. No fun...trying to fill space with lots of diagrams to compensate.

Winter Showers
So anyways there are zillions of really cool blog worthy things going on in my life right now, but I'll just post one. Two days ago I discovered the secret to having a hot shower at my appartment. It was my first consistently hot shower all winter! Talk about sing'n praises to the Lord in the shower! WooHoo! Yes, ever since the chilly 4 degree celcius weather has crept in since the start of winter, I've been trying to figure out how to get a warm shower. Here in China they have real-time water heaters (they don't have a big reservoir looking thing), so the trick is to figure out how to maximize water flowing through the water heater when it's on. I'll save you the details, but these things work totally opposite of water heaters in the states. Like in the states...if you have a cold shower it means you're using up the water too fast, so if you want a longer shower, you need to decrease the water flow. But here, you need to turn it on really high. If the water sits in the instant water heater too long, then it overheats the water heater so it shuts itself off.

So anyways...yeah, no more cold showers
